To be a poet one needs the six P’s – the pencil, the paper, the perception, the passion, the persistence and the unshakable persuasion that the poem is in fact possible and attainable. - Grace Perry

Cafe Rosso

Check out my poem in the August-September 2012 edition of Sotto. Sotto is Australian Poetry's online journal and I am honoured to have my poem nestled in between some wonderful articles and poetry reviews.

Cafe Rosso
By Rhiannon Hall

grey thunders Bowral skies
two women with windswept hair
warming over cannelloni, their cappuccinos cupped.

Lovers lean across tables, faces almost touch;
Order seafood—Grigliato Misto, white wine.

Big men, cocky as sunshine yellow parrots,
chucking back macchiatos; riffling work schedules,
envy every casual diner.

Waitresses flitting across the room,
enjoy sweet meringue aromas,
the delicate perfumes
of stout women waiting to pay.

  1. Congrats, Rhiannon. Now to the next publication! Go for it.

I've had knock backs from Page Seventeen, The Gwen Harwood Poetry Prize and the Shoalhaven Literary Award in the last week or so. Grrr. The poet's path is a rocky road without many pink marshmallows (unless you're MT). Thankfully, I'm not too grim - I can still offer up appalling puns.

Thanks for joining my blogs. We'll have to meet up sometime.

    Peace and light,

  2. Thanks Lorne! Sorry I've been off the air for a while... was finishing off my thesis, but all done now :-) Time to start writing poetry again and pursue that next publication. What about you, any pink marshmallows? Mark Tredinnick is coming to chat at Gilbert's on the 10th of November about his poetry. You should come by, it would be great to meet you.

  3. Hi Rhiannon. I've got poems coming out with Famous Reporter (Tasmania), Poetry for Rhino in a Shrinking World (South Africa) and Rabbit (Melbourne). I feel blessed. Unfortunately, I can't get to any of the November bashes you've got organised due to HSC-related commitments. We'll meet one day, I'm sure. Thanks for putting up my blog link on your blogroll. LJ.

  4. No worries Lorne! Congrats on your publications! I have to start sending off for comps and publications again, try my luck.

  5. Go for it! God speed.

I'm happy to read any of your work and offer comments...
